| Ronaldo
was born in Rio de Janeiro and has resided in the U.S. since 1981;
on Maui since 1989. Having earned a degree in Illustration from
Cal State Long Beach, this adventurous artist feels painting is
his life work, always changing, always learning. |
|
|
Growing
up in Rio was nontheless very exciting. Brazil's music, landscape,
the people and the beaches are really inspiring to all, especially
artists. Ronaldo's parents recognized his talents at an early
age and were the most motivating force besides Ronaldo's own early
passion for observing and drawing. But in Brazil he was too young
for formal training in art, leaving him to grow his skills on
his own, when not in school or at the beach. |
|
Arriving
in the U.S. early 1981, Ronaldo was amazed by all the different
opportunities to focus on Art as a career, as well as to be
able to surf some of California's famous breaks. His high school
years and college years were made possible with the support
of his parents, Ronaldo's adopted american family; the Mayol's,
and free-lance design jobs such as a sign painting business
he created.
|
|
In the
summer he was off to earn the next semester's tuition guiding
the rivers of Northern California and abroad. But
guiding rivers wasn't just about work. It was a place where
he made friends for life, a place where he could experience
great adrenaline as well as peace and tranquility. His travels
throughout the earth's arteries such as Norway, Chile, Turkey,
Costa Rica and the Grand Canyon was incredibly inspiring, cleansing,
fun and full of discoveries.
After college
Ronaldo continued to guide rivers in the summertime and discover
more of Hawaii, its people, and the waves in the winter months.
|
 |
| On Maui in
1989, Ronaldo met artist George Allan and his wife Janet at a
life drawing session at the artist's studio. From the next day
on Ronaldo worked closely with George for the next six winters
building frames, strecher bars, kaleidoscopes, painting in the
studio, painting on location, and just having fun. |
|
|
George became
a major influence in Ronaldo's work teaching him more about
color, light, shapes, and all that he knows about pallete knife
technique. As a great friend and mentor, they continue to go
out and paint as often as possible. Until
1994 Ronaldo showed at galleries throughout Maui and under the
banyan tree. Since 1994 "Lahaina Galleries" has exhibited
his prints and originals exclusively in Hawaii. Presently
Ronaldo, Jennifer, Summer and their newest child Ocean
have happily made their home at Puamana, Lahaina.

The
river time doesn't last all summer anymore, but still an essential
part of his life.

Besides
the river the artist takes time out to enjoy the outdoors, snowboarding,
sailing and what brought him to Maui in the first place, surfing.

On their Santa Cruz
27 sailboat "Morning Missile" Ronaldo and his
family go out cruising for some family time. Taking time to
enjoy the spetacular Maui sunsets and the beauty of the west
Maui mountains from the sea is all part of what it takes to
get inspired and create the next image on canvas. The "Morning
Missile" is also part of the Maui
Boat & Yacht Club racing fleet.

Painting
color and light, his paintings reflect his respect
for the beauty of nature. Subjects such as his harbor scenes,
plantation houses and pristine beaches stimulates our intellect
to recall history and traditions as well as stirring our spirit
with the beauty he portrays.
